Why has my ice maker stopped making ice?

Cubes that come out small, hollow or half-formed say the mold never filled — a filter past its life, a restriction in the supply, or a fill tube partly iced. How the diagnosis goes

County water carries plenty of mineral, and the ice machine is where a household meets it first. Deposit forms at the inlet valve and inside the fill tube, the volume arriving at the mold drops by a fraction each month, and the cubes get smaller across a season. Nothing about that feels like a fault, which is why so many of these machines are replaced while the real problem sits upstream in the plumbing. We time a fill and look into the mold instead of fitting a harvest module on spec, since a new module on a restricted supply produces cubes just as hollow as the ones you already have.

Airflow is the local variable. In a kitchen detailed so the appliance vanishes, the grille at the base of the machine tends to end up behind a continuous toe kick, a return panel or a stone waterfall added after the unit was chosen. The machine then breathes its own heat, runs longer for less ice, and looks from the front like a worn-out machine. If yours used to fill the bin overnight and now needs two days with nothing else changed, start with the coil and the clearance. Neither of those is a part, and neither shows up in a fault code.
