What is the loud humming or rattling from my refrigerator?
Short answer
Where the sound is loudest tells us most of what we need. Short bursts of buzzing that arrive several times a day, last a few seconds and stop again are usually plumbing rather than refrigeration. That is the fill valve opening. What matters is what happens next: if cubes drop into the bin a while later, the machine is behaving normally and you are simply hearing it through the cabinetry. If the buzz keeps arriving and no ice ever appears, the valve is chattering against a restriction or a spent filter, which is a small job compared with anything that involves opening the sealed system.
