Questions

Answers before you call

Which parts of Solana Beach do you cover, and how far past 92075?

All of 92075: west of Highway 101 above Fletcher Cove and Tide Beach Park, the Cedros design district, La Colonia de Eden Gardens, and east across Interstate 5 through Lomas Santa Fe, Isla Verde and San Elijo Hills. Past the city line: Del Mar, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Valley and La Jolla, adding 92014, 92007, 92024 and 92067.

Is the line really answered at night and at weekends?

Yes. Scheduling runs around the clock, weekends and holidays included: a built-in that goes warm on a Saturday evening with a full refrigerator in it is not a Monday problem. Same-day appointments happen when the day's route allows, and when it does not you hear that on the call rather than get booked into a window nobody can hold.

How is the visit charged?

Two figures, and you hear both before they apply. The diagnostic visit carries a flat charge quoted when you book, not discovered on the doorstep. Once the failed component has been identified, the repair is priced as one figure covering parts and labor, approved by you before anything is fitted. Go ahead with the repair and the diagnostic charge is usually waived.

Can a refrigerator with a custom panel be serviced without disturbing the cabinetry?

Yes, and in Solana Beach it is the normal job. Sub-Zero built-ins are serviced from the front: the grille above the doors comes off for the condenser and machine compartment, the interior rear panel for the evaporator, defrost heater and thermistor. Hinge and closer adjustment is done with the panel still on the door, and the unit stays in its opening throughout.

Do you work on wine cabinets and undercounter ice machines built into island and bar joinery?

Yes. They are more of the work here than the refrigerator alone suggests: wine columns, undercounter cabinets, beverage centers, refrigerator drawers and ice machines all breathe at the floor, so clearance comes first. A base grille shut behind a toe kick or a stone waterfall leaves the machine recycling its exhaust. On wine we probe the racks; on ice the cube says water or harvest.

The display shows the temperature I set, so why is the food warm?

The display reports its sensor, which sits in one spot the circulating air reaches easily. Let ice build on an evaporator, or air stop reaching the shelves, and that sensor stays accurate while the shelf above it runs several degrees warmer. So we probe at the food, top and bottom, and confirm 37 to 40°F in the refrigerator and 0°F in the freezer.

Repair or replace: how do you decide?

On built-in equipment the arithmetic normally favors repair. Replacing means matching a cabinet opening, a grille height and a panel front from a cabinetmaker's drawing, and in a kitchen finished to Solana Beach standards the work rarely stops at the appliance. Meanwhile the faults that take these units out are ordinary: evaporator fan, defrost heater, thermistor, door gasket, ice maker module, condenser fan.

Which parts go into the repair, and does having you out affect a factory warranty?

OEM-equivalent parts, and we stand behind our labor and the components we supply. We stay out of the pattern-parts market: a generic evaporator fan or thermistor tends to run a season and then rejoin the fault list. If the appliance is still inside a Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking or Thermador factory warranty, start with the manufacturer, since sealed-system coverage is tied to who opens the system.
