Why does frost keep building up in my freezer?
Short answer
Frost that regrows after you clear it means the automatic defrost is not finishing its cycle. Almost all of it comes down to three things: the heater has failed, the thermistor that starts the cycle has drifted out of range, or the seal is admitting humid air faster than a cycle can remove it. In a paneled kitchen the weight of a solid overlay front gradually pulls the door out of square until the gasket presses along the top and floats free at the bottom of the hinge stile, which looks flawless and seals nothing at all.
Time it before you call. Clear the compartment down to bare walls, note the date, and see how long the frost takes to come back. A week or less means the cycle is not running at all and the heater or its thermistor is the likely answer. A slow return over several weeks, heaviest around the opening rather than the back wall, points at the door instead. That single observation saves an appointment's worth of guessing, and it tells us which parts to bring.
The reason not to simply keep scraping is that ice on the evaporator works as insulation. Air movement across the coil falls off, the compartment loses a little ground every week, and the panel stops describing anything the food would recognize. Owners describe that as a slow decline rather than a breakdown, which is exactly what it is. The rear panel comes off, the heater and the thermistor get tested where they sit, and the drain gets cleared in the same visit, since a defrost circuit that has been struggling has usually left ice in the drain as well.
Where the frost sits is the most useful thing you can tell us. Concentrated on the back wall, it is the defrost circuit. Around the opening, on the shelves nearest the door, or on the underside of the door itself, it is the seal, and in a humid coastal town full of heavy overlay panels that is a very common answer. On freezer drawers built into island joinery the same fault shows differently: ice packed into the runners and a drawer that no longer glides usually means the front has stopped meeting its seal square.
