Built-ins buried in cabinetry, from Lomas Santa Fe down to the water

We repair Sub-Zero built-in appliances in Solana Beach and the communities next to it: Del Mar, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Valley and La Jolla. There is more kitchen design per block in Solana Beach than almost anywhere in the county, and it shows in the appliances. A high proportion of what we open here is panel-ready or fully integrated, set flush with the run and finished so the machine reads as joinery. Handsome work, and a service problem, because a Sub-Zero built-in takes no air from the floor. Its condenser sits behind the grille above the doors and throws heat upward, and in a designed kitchen that grille very often ends up capped by a soffit, a run of crown, or a filler panel taken to the ceiling. From then on the unit re-breathes its own exhaust. Head pressure climbs, the compartment gives up ground through the afternoon and makes it back overnight, and the owner reports something that only goes wrong sometimes. No component has failed and no component will fix it, which is why the air path gets examined before the diagnostic display does.

Where in town the kitchen sits changes the rest. This is a small city with a genuine gradient in it: from the bluff above Fletcher Cove and Tide Beach Park the ground climbs east across Interstate 5 to the Lomas Santa Fe ridge, and those two ends do not load a coil the same way. Near the water the fins pick up a salt-bearing film that grips instead of shedding, so it has to be combed out rather than blown off, and the spade terminals and fastener heads inside the machine compartment corrode on a timetable that inland units never keep. Up the hill the air is warmer and drier, the deposit is house dust and animal hair, and it clears in minutes but returns quickly. Same appliance, same ZIP code, different first failure.
